Project Pinterest - Antlers Jewlery Holder

remember when i started the pinterest project? you know the one where i documented my progress of carrying out some of my "pinned" ideas? yeah, i barely remember too - it's been that long.

well i'm back on the project pinterest wagon! i attribute it to the cooler weather and the start of fall. it seems to have lit a fire under my rear and i want to get stuff done.

i have been on a bit of an accessories binge lately. there are so many great deals, steals, and super sales around that i have been scooping up bracelets, necklaces, and rings left and right. i find accessories are a great way to update your closet without spending a ton.

of course, the compulsive organizer in me needs to display and organize these things. i showed you my jewelry display methods a while back but i needed some more necklace storage space. i decided to combine form and function and incorporate antlers (a big fall decorating trend) into my storage methods.

i originally found the idea on neha made and pinned it to my master bedroom ideas board. i found the antlers on z gallerie and i think it gives my dressing room a little touch of whimsey along with some additional much needed necklace storage space.

DIY Jewelry Display

a couple of months ago, i decided to hang most of my necklaces in our dressing room. i figured if i can see them, i might actually wear them more often. turns out that philosophy is true. i am not a big necklace wearer (i prefer bracelets or fun earrings) but i do have some fun necklaces that were hidden away in my jewelry box.

i got the 2 rows of hooks at lowes (similar jewelry hooks) in their storage and organization section for under $10 a piece. not only does seeing them remind me to wear them more often, i also think it looks pretty.

while getting dressed the other day i thought, "why don't i display my earrings too?" i remembered my sister-in-law had her earrings hanging on an old mesh flat strainer of sorts and i figured i could make something like that. and, as it turns out, i had all the supplies i needed to do this project.

you will need:
1 medium frame (backing and glass removed)
wire mesh (i used old gutter guards i found in rolls at my grandfather's house)
wire cutters
staple gun
staples
painting tape (optional)

i simply cut two strips of the wire mesh and stapled it to the back of the frame (bring sure to pull it taught as i went). then i trimmed the edges with the wire cutters. (you can tell i have already re-purposed this frame once before by spray painting it white.)

the edges ended up being a little sharp and even though i knew it would be hanging on the wall, i decided to put a little frog tape around the edges to keep my from cutting my finger open while hanging the frame.

of course you will also need a hammer and nail to hang the finished product and some pretty earrings to hang.

note: hoops don't really work in the set-up, but i found most every other kind of earrings do. for post earrings, i just pulled the earring backing away from the earring a bit and it hung right on the wire.

i saw this idea (and there are many others like it out there) and wanted to do a map version of where E and i met (clarendon, va), where we got married (anna maria island, fl), and where we now live (hunt valley, md).

i just found maps on google maps and used a glue pen to write the words and sprinkled them with glitter (my favorite medium:).

this is actually part of a larger pinterest project to do a wall of framed items. i am in the process of spray painting mismatched frames white and filling them with things that make me smile. stay tuned for the finished product.

are you sick of nail polish yet? for some reason i can't get enough - most likely because they almost always involve glitter!

more specifically (from left to right) ulta professional glam session, sephora by opi are you glistenin', and seche vite dry fast top coat for super shine and quick dry on top. i'm loving them!

i pinned this image a while ago. i think it actually may have been one of the first things i pinned that first night i stayed up way too late glued to the computer screen, pinning like crazy. i knew when i pinned this in the spring, i wanted to re-create it as part of my christmas decor.

last week i had a coupon for 50% one full-priced item at michaels. (do you all have the michaels phone app? it's awesome - no more clipping or printing coupons. they scan your coupon on your phone. crazy, right. who would have ever imagined that 10 years ago - what will they think of next?? way to save paper michaels. yay for environmentally friendly ways to save $. everyone else should do this - yes you, LOFT and jcrew and wegmans and other places i shop. ok, excuse the rant, back to business!) i knew i wanted to use my coupon to get my stretched canvas for this project.

all you need is 1 stretched canvas (any size you like, i used 18"x24"), 1 strand of christmas lights (i used 100 count regular strand), a piece of cardboard, an x-acto knife (i never in a million years would have thought that is how you spelled that - i had to google exacto knife and it corrected me), and a stencil (optional).

i printed out an enlarged copy of the canvas picture but ended up just free-handing it after about 10 cuts. lay your canvas smooth side down onto a large piece of cardboard. tape stencil to back of canvas (if using) and make a small hole where you want each light to go. i inserted the x-acto knife into the canvas about 1/3 of the way and gave it a 1/4 turn and that seemed to be perfect. you want the hole to be slightly smaller than the light so when you force it through, it stays in the hole. i made 100 holes and then pushed one light into each hole. make sure you start at the top and finish at the bottom of the canvas so you can plug the end of the stand of lights into an extension cord at the bottom. i propped mine up in the middle of the mantle instead of hanging it so you wouldn't see the extension cord hanging out the bottom.

i just love how it turned out! of course, it looks much better in the evening and when it's plugged in but i think it adds a great burst of light above the fireplace. i kept the rest of the mantel simple and silver. the best part? it only cost me $7.49! i already owned everything but the canvas and with my 50% off coupon, it was only $7.49. woo to the hoo!

Project Pinterest - Cake Stand Perfume

are you addicted to pinterest like i am? seriously, it's made me a more organized and motivated. i actually remember recipes i want to make and diy things i want to attempt. my boards are getting pretty full.

what the heck is pinterest?

well, according to the site itself, "Pinterest is a virtual pinboard. Pinterest allows you to organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. You can browse pinboards created by other people to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes, and share their favorite recipes."

which brings me to the first of (hopefully) many pinterest inspiration posts. i am going to take something i have pinned and put my spin on it. it could be a recipe i have been dying to make, (can someone please explain why almost all of the recipes i have pinned are desserts?) an outfit i want to recreate (it might get me out of my current yoga pants and hoodie rut), a house improvement, or a diy item (lord help me, i might even attempt to get crafty).

the cake stand is courtesy of my wonderful sister-in-law, K. it actually doubles as a chip and dip plate too if you flip it over. the best thing is, i get some use out of it when i am not baking cakes or inhaling chips!
